Back in action!

Hello! i just returned from a week+ long vacation...a terribly rainy, then hot and sweaty vacation, but a vacation, nonetheless...
I am still recovering but here's a quick update, with more to come this week!

Over the 8 days I was away, someone emailed me that Mara Zepeda of Neither Snow had a sneak peek of her house featured on Design Sponge...and that my Ladies are complicated... print was in one of the photos! How exciting!



I also started a small sculpture of my friend Molly Mullahy for an upcoming show at Nexus Gallery in Philadelphia. Photos and details to come!

This week I'll start up work again on the solo show I have coming up, as well as on an installation piece for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival's Festival Bar. Many a photo to come...

Oh! And very exciting upcoming classes that I'll be teaching this fall are an Introduction to Animal Sculpture Class through Pterodactyl Philadelphia (to be held in my studio...come check it out!) and Sculptural Forms through the Fleisher Art Memorial. Can't wait!!!

Rain Rain Go Away

I love my studio, despite it's hotness in summer, and freezing-ness in winter. I feel like it's a great space, big enough that there's enough room to do everything I need to...HOWEVER, I HATE when the dingbats upstairs leave their WINDOWS OPEN FOR A WHOLE WEEKEND DURING THE MOST RAINY SUMMER EVER! URGH! I was so mad yesterday to come in and find that water had leaked through their floor, all over my stuff!

It leaked onto the current piece I'm making...

It leaked all over handtools, papers, etc....

It leaked on my books!!!

It got all over my desk!

And all over the floor!

I started to clean and fix the mess as best I can...so far the only thing I'm still REALLY mad about is the books that got wet...Urgh....

The South Philadelphia Boat Show

I went to the opening of The South Philadelphia Boat Show on Saturday, at Storage, a space headed by Jake Kehs, Gus, and Preston.

It was pretty awesome...the work was insanely varied but it all fit together really well. I took a bunch of photos and don't know who alot of this work is by but if anyone takes a peek and knows an artist whose work is shown here, I'll gladly add their name!

Fancy embroidered boat that I loved.

A lovely cut paper/pencil piece which I feel like I should know who this is by but I don't....it just looks very familiar to me for some reason.

Blocks of cocaine in a mini boat! Hysterical!

No idea who this is by but I loved it!

I didn't know who this was by when I took the photo but thought it was awesome. I happily found out later that it's by the fabulous Ms. Kaitlin Mosely!

Who doesn't love a saggy sewn anchor...!

I'm assuming this is Tristan Lowe's, since it shares a title with the giant felt whale at the Fabric Workshop and that its printed on felt. I love the image and the texture of the felt.

This was a secret little video hidden in a hole in the drywall...!

This piece was done by my friend Jake Kehs, who said all the little floating and collaged bits were cut from a Harbor Freight catalog...upon closer inspection Justin and I cracked up...sure enough he cut tiny little tools out of the catalogs. Anyone who's ever ordered from Harbor Freight know that the catalogs come VERY often and so I thought this was a genius use of them.





A ginger-boat...made of candy and fanciness...it was awesome.

T-Pain as Neptune...I almost died laughing when I saw this. And it was made really well too, so it was doubly wonderful.

I have no idea who made these boats in beds but I am absolutely in love with them....

There were about a billion other things and I missed photos of them somehow...I didn't even get a good photo of my own piece! But for real, the show was amazing...

Random Cats

I am super crankie today for some reason...too much to do, not enough time, feeling unprepared for things, hot, pregnant, tired...etc....so these are here to make me feel better.

In the Studio

Weekly Update - Lazy style Wednesday Edition...

I haven't figured out if I'm really busy lately or just really lazy...I have a bunch on my plate and am actually getting stuff done, in the studio, the house, and in my brain...but I still feel like I'm neglecting 1000 things...And as I just wrote on my facebook page, I am trying to fit weeks worth of stuff into days. Good news is, though, that I started some new work (Process photos tomorrow! Promise!), and have a few upcoming projects that I'm really excited about, so I think I'm doing ok. (I think...) :)

I started working on the sculpture for my September show at Vagabond and am excited about it...! Will post photos tomorrow....!

Random Misc-ness

Bronze Casting with Sheike - There's this awesome guy at this casting place in the Jeweler's Row area...I think the name is International Casting or something like that...He's super nice and does a great job. Justin took a bunch of Kiki Smith pieces to him for casting a while back, when he worked for the foundry that casts her work (the pieces were so small that they were better suited to investment casting rather than the ceramic shell casting the foundry does) and Sheike did some fabulous casting work. And not only that, he's always really interested in how to innovate the process. He and Justin talk about casting and how to make it better every time they see each other. He's also interested in the difference between casting sculpture and jewelry bits and how to make the processes for one work for the other and vice versa. I love people like this! I'll be sure to include photos of the finished piece when it returns!
