Seraphin Gallery is proud to announce My Dog Speaks; An Animal Narrative in Contemporary Art, curated by Seraphin artist Hiro Sakaguchi. Twelve emerging and established artists will participate in this group exhibition in which animals play the central role. This will include a variety of mediums such as paintings, drawings, and sculpture.
Artists Sarah McEneaney and Laura McKinley use animals in their stylized paintings in which their respective creatures take part in the nostalgic and kitsch routine of daily life. This differs widely from the airy and light work of Sherif Habashi who uses zebras as a decorative element in his painting. Eric McDade and Bonnie Brenda Scott work with playful and cultural associations, differing from the zoological approach of artist Caitlin Emma Perkins. Artists Anne Canfield, Caroline Picard, John Karpinski, Alina Josan and Amanda Miller transform animals to fit into a fantastical fiction while artists Darla Jackson and Nancy Sophy work with broad symbolism as represented by their select creature.
Through each work, these artists view, interact, and imagine animals in their own setting, highlighting the ever apparent bond between humans and their four legged, and at times, two legged friends.
Seraphin Gallery showcases My Dog Speaks from May 9th – June 9th, 2009. Artists featured in this exhibit have showcased in the Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art at University of Pennsylvania, the Museum of American Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Weatherspoon Art Museum. Seraphin Gallery artist and curator Hiro Sakaguchi has curated “Picture Journal Project” as part of curator Sean Stoops’ exhibit “Subterranean”, “Useless Weapon” at Green Lantern in Chicago, and has lectured at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
