As I start on a new piece, I always am a mix of excited and overwhelmed. I tend to do this to myself...big projects on tight deadlines. But I suppose the immediacy is what keeps me on task. I have a few things to finish up this week and then I plan to dive in as soon as I am back in the studio.<br />
<br />
Note to self: Get casters and finish the modeling stand. Build the damn armature already. Recycle the clay.<br />

Sometimes I see images on the internet and just have to stop and be completely absorbed by their beauty. This photo of a fox frozen in ice is completely heartbreaking, but I also found it overwhelmingly beautiful. I used to labor over my symbolism dictionaries, trying to decide what animals worked best in which pieces. And then one day I just starting trusting myself. I took the images that I was envisioning and just made them. Usually when I looked up the symbolism later, the animal I had chosen made perfect sense with the emotion or idea I was trying to convey. Here are the animals I am working with at the moment...<br />
<br />
<b>Bear:</b> bravery; strength; self-restraint; cruelty; evil influence; a problem of difficulty; obstacle; violence; solitary life; martyrdom; stubbornness; melancholy; the dangerous aspect of the unconscious<br />
<br />
<b>Bird:</b> the soul; the spirit; time; creation; aspiration; love; freedom<br />
<br />
<b>Deer:</b> timidity; gentleness; the soul; searching after the truth;<br />
<br />
<b>Fawn:</b> innocence; defenselessness<br />
<br />
<b>Rabbit:</b> skepticism; suspicion; watchfulness; humbleness; a victim; resourcefulness; hope<br />
<br />
<b>Wolf:</b> hunger; hypocrisy; lust; cruelty; fraud; deceit; war; cunning; ferocity; corruption; darkness; greed<br />

<br />
Well it's begun, again. I started this piece in 2012 originally, but it didn't feel right so I let it dry out and tore it all down. The image is of a bear tearing out its own heart. The title, <i>Coup de grâce</i>, means "blow of mercy", or the death blow to end the suffering of a severely wounded person or animal.<br />
<br />
I've started again, first with the above sketch, which is slightly altered in expression from the original one. I took the hand not holding the heart and rather than have it out in space, I made it touching the spot that the heart was just pulled from. It seems more fitting.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHX-KRbJ0xHDmPfrwN4NLYcnqRRMVu5vTemO7dQZFuxecMhiwX6NuLchyMGy3vbH9TkZscZ2eLhUfuVYOLlphFIr1US7R2M9oMMN0Do3J0GCKIsSbcxpgv_b73373blu0yHXoH9Pzml2WN/s1600/Screen+shot+2014-02-03+at+12.58.57+AM.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHX-KRbJ0xHDmPfrwN4NLYcnqRRMVu5vTemO7dQZFuxecMhiwX6NuLchyMGy3vbH9TkZscZ2eLhUfuVYOLlphFIr1US7R2M9oMMN0Do3J0GCKIsSbcxpgv_b73373blu0yHXoH9Pzml2WN/s1600/Screen+shot+2014-02-03+at+12.58.57+AM.png" height="320" width="318" /> </a></div>
<br />
Next I started a small scale clay maquette that I will likely take to completion. It has already helped me work out some proportion issues, which is nice. But in true Darla fashion, I've jumped the gun and have already started the big piece, as you can see in the photo below. I am three five gallon buckets of clay in and will need to recycle clay faster than I have been. I hope to finish this by the end of the month. Its really important to me that this piece be in this show. Its the epitome of everything I am feeling lately...about everything. So I need to get it out...<br />

72 days. I have 72 days to finish up a body of work for my upcoming solo show, <i>Brace for Impact</i>. Originally, I was supposed to have a solo show in November 2013 at Liz Afif Gallery before it closed. Between the gallery closing and being over loaded with work at the Sculpture Gym, I never proceeded with finishing the work.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNtCIC7MsNEc1LtSJ4PftWOPYOkk612Cwf-lDzobhcVOU2W-QFNhi3pHXfqVn21-4Mn1x-rxs4Ek_blW6S1D_m9lYz1ZjFyiSI1ogSgGv4Td92Hu6r4Y4NGakEwgDSEOJFFNijLWiCCXhC/s1600/1009902_10201929515571960_395908464_n.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNtCIC7MsNEc1LtSJ4PftWOPYOkk612Cwf-lDzobhcVOU2W-QFNhi3pHXfqVn21-4Mn1x-rxs4Ek_blW6S1D_m9lYz1ZjFyiSI1ogSgGv4Td92Hu6r4Y4NGakEwgDSEOJFFNijLWiCCXhC/s1600/1009902_10201929515571960_395908464_n.jpg" height="400" width="400" /></a> </div>
<br />
I had the idea to schedule a solo show and within the same week Steven, the Gallery Director at PSG, asked if I'd be interested in showing in PSG Gallery. I agreed....to April....in January. Crazy, considering the amount of things I want to accomplish, but normal when compared to the rest of my art career. Everything seems to have always come together on short notice, so I'm hoping to put together a really amazing show.<br />
<br />

<br />
I've got a number of things started and hope to edit down from a larger group. I've also got some crazy ideas lined up for this show, so we will see what plays out. Either way, I am excited to be making things... Its been very hard lately to have not been making, creating... I know I am working on the Sculpture Gym, which is a space for others to create, but in order to feel whole I need to be making art. So here I go, again...<br />

Oh hello there. It's been a while, no? My apologies. I've just been so busy with...EVERYTHING. Truly the last year and a half of my life has been INSANE. I've had multiple major life changes occur, some good, some not so good. I've opened up a small business while raising a 3 year old. I've lost and gained perspective on things. I've realized very important things about myself and others, only to forget them periodically and have to continually remember to remember them...(confusing, I know!) And the most important thing that I keep remembering and forgetting and remembering again is that I am, in fact, a human. Just like anyone else. I try not be too hard on myself for mistakes I've made or people I've inadvertently hurt, but part of my character is that I am a harsh critic when it comes to being me. It's good in some ways...but I've realized lately that I need to take a step back and be easy on myself. I need to re-prioritize my life and certain things fit in (raising my daughter, making art, running a business, taking care of myself) and other things don't (worrying about EVERYTHING, countless hours spent on social media, and other time sucks that I can't remember at the moment.) SO I'm starting here, because in truth I do enjoy having an outlet to say what I'm thinking about or show what I'm up to. And I'm saying goodbye to other things...like twitter (I don't even understand Twitter...why was I on there?!), like Facebook (this one is slightly anxiety inducing as I do enjoy connections with people....but I'd rather spend the time making actual connections with people...like writing letters, or meeting for coffee instead of having a false sense of connection), and last but not least my beloved Instagram...The Philadelphia Sculpture Gym will still have these things for the sake of promoting the business, but running two of everything is a lot to keep up with. So if you'd like to catch up, or see what I'm up to, call me, text me, email me, write me a letter (I LOVE GETTING MAIL!) or check out this blog... I think scaling back will give me more time to focus on what I love, like O'Rae, making art and building the Sculpture Gym. Thanks so much to everyone for the support you've shown me, over the last year and a half especially. I cannot put into words my appreciation.<br />
All my love. I saw the above quote tonight and it stuck with me...I feel like everything I hear and see lately has been informing this new body of work...that I'm seeing everything for a reason. Usually when starting projects things get sorted out as I work on the piece but this time everything is unfolding really quickly so I feel compelled to start the work as soon as possible, despite being busier than ever. This idea of "aggrandizing damage" really strikes me, because when making art I feel like thats what we are doing anyway, aggrandizing our emotions. Or atleast what I'm doing. I'm wondering how this will all play out...my goal is to do EVERYTHING myself....build all the armatures alone, make the pieces, make the molds alone (including one of an 8 foot tall grizzly), cast alone...Usually I have help from Justin or fabulous interns but this time it's been in my head that in order to be fully successful, I need to do it all myself...</div>

I am simultaneously so happy and so frustrated...Happy because I am sculpting, frustrated because of life and its ups, downs, and curveballs...I've had a piece in my head for a while now and it seems fitting to have started working on it... <i>Party's over...(Pygmy Rabbit)</i> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Last week I sent this piece out to <a href="http://thinkspacegallery.com/">Thinkspace Gallery</a> in Culver City, CA for their upcoming show, <i>Wild at Heart: Keep Wildlife in the Wild</i>, which opens this weekend. The show will benefit <a href="http://bornfreeusa.org/">Born Free USA</a>, a non-profit organization that advocates for the ethical treatment and protection of wild animals. I really struggled with another piece (a bat) that I had started for the show months ago. I just couldn't get it to feel right and went back to research other endangered animals. I found the pygmy rabbit and everything just came together in a cute yet dark little piece (Just how I like it...)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i>Thinkspace is proud to present “Wild at Heart: Keep Wildlife in the
Wild,” an exhibition to raise awareness about the precarious predicament
of wild creatures around the world, and to benefit efforts to protect
them in their natural habitat. Featuring a stellar cast of more than 100
artists from all corners of the art world, this exhibition brings
together some of the most profound and innovative voices making art
today. In recognition of the imperiled state of much of the world’s
wildlife, each artist will apply their own unique perspective to our
relationship with the fascinating creatures with whom we share our
planet.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<i> </i>
</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>As the natural world becomes increasingly impacted by shifting
climate, human greed and diminishing resources, protecting those
creatures that still roam free becomes ever more vital to the soul of
humanity. For even if we could continue to exist without wildlife, the
spirit-crushing sadness that our species would take upon itself would
surely rob all joy from life. Those majestic, miraculous, elemental
beings which we admire from afar are at the root of who we are as people
— from the woodland protagonists of our childhood storybooks, to the
metaphors we use to describe ourselves as adults, to the animal spirits
that visit us in our dreams. As we take steps to protect them from those
who would rob them of their freedom, we also improve our own species’
chances to persist far into the future, both by preserving the natural
world we all share, and by cherishing the sacred genesis of our
imagination and symbology.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<i>In appreciation of the magnificent creatures with whom we share the
planet, Thinkspace will donate 20% of the sale price of each piece of
art to Born Free USA and the Animal Protection Institute, which operate
jointly as a non-profit organization that advocates worldwide for the
ethical treatment and protection of wild animals, and also maintains a
large sanctuary for rescued primates. To honor the animals closest to
our hearts, the gallery will be accepting donations of old blankets to
donate to area shelters so dogs don’t have to sleep on cold hard
concrete, as well as other used and new pet supplies. The opening will
feature the release of a gorgeous limited edition screenprinted poster
especially created for the exhibition by the incomparable Aaron Horkey.
We hope you will join us on May 26th to celebrate and defend the wild
things that fill our lives with wonder and mystery.</i></div>

Wow! It's been a while...so sorry for that. My life has been crazy at best recently. All good crazy but crazy nonetheless. Along with a million other things I am finishing up a piece for <i>Wild at Heart</i>, an exhibition that will take place at Thinkspace Gallery. For some reason I've been working on a bat piece for months...laboring over it...hating it...reworking it...and it still has not been right. So I decided to switch gears and find another animal that I could work with...a quick Google search turned up a list of endangered North American animals and there was the <a href="http://www.earthsendangered.com/profile.asp?gr=&view=c&ID=9&sp=793">Pygmy Rabbit</a> (!!!) I was simultaneously overjoyed and crushed that there is a rabbit on the endangered species list (Overjoyed because it meant I got to sculpt one! Crushed because who wants any animals to be endangered, especially one of your very favorite animal families...in my case rabbits (Big surprise I'm sure.)) I'm, of course, putting a twist on this so stay tuned for more photos...<br />Darlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02288261950647167635noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3953835160333295387.post-40590716197185775382012-03-02T08:19:00.002-08:002012-03-02T08:19:22.503-08:00This Saturday at Thinkspace Gallery!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
Getting there...slowly but surely getting there...need to sculpt some teeth in sculpting epoxy and get them into the clay to make sure it all looks right...but today was good...I think he looks waaaay less gremliny and way more cat like. Still some major tweaks to finish up, and then some minor ones but definitely closer...<br />

<br />Ok, ok...got in 45 more minutes on this guy...getting somewhere but still needs a lot of work. I am trying to find the right balance of how evil I want this cat to look...maybe this is too much? Too gremliny? Does he need to be so evil? Is he a 28 Days running zombie or an original Night of the Living Dead strolling zombie. (I am scared of both but zombies that run scare the shit out of me...) Hmmmmm...<br />

30 more minutes on this guy today. So no real progress, but did flesh out his body and head a bit more. Still need to play with the pose...something is not quite right yet...I need a good few hour long session to make a dent. I still have time but don't want to slack...Darlahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02288261950647167635noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3953835160333295387.post-86272886830498037102012-01-06T09:28:00.000-08:002012-01-06T09:28:44.514-08:00And here we go...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started sculpting this piece this week and these photos document only about 30 minutes of progress...(Olivia was having a nap while the light was good on our 2nd floor, but ended up waking up earlier than I thought...) So it's nothing too exciting but its a start nonetheless... And I got to work with this amazing black clay (more of a dark brown really) that my friends Homer and Nora gave me for Christmas...I LOVE IT. Aside from the sexiness of black clay, its so nice to work on the piece in a color that is very close to the actual color it will be when its finished. The pose will change some and the piece needs to be filled out a bit more but its the very beginning so I'm not too worried at the moment...</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
While I was in the studio yesterday (freezing my ass off), I also started an armature for a piece I've been wanting to make.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My workspace is pretty full of...everything... </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHita7oCW9v89RnRQxnH5iudf3WnA9n8A_LlzVf_Hs_V6N3eITNDFD1145tF_Q3OFXHEGbpeB1g1Gzk3GtPLOOaxeqWIKHoXuS-wbHLyiP9yAi485GCmjLvVq54NN-cTQKpiV-WGUe_hIZ/s1600/IMAG1260.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHita7oCW9v89RnRQxnH5iudf3WnA9n8A_LlzVf_Hs_V6N3eITNDFD1145tF_Q3OFXHEGbpeB1g1Gzk3GtPLOOaxeqWIKHoXuS-wbHLyiP9yAi485GCmjLvVq54NN-cTQKpiV-WGUe_hIZ/s320/IMAG1260.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First a dive into the armature bin...Justin and I keep all of our armatures and repurpose them over and over again. We are still using armatures we made while in school, adding new ones when the old ones aren't quite right. Luckily I found an old figure armature that would work with some tweaking.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3Rol5ICntEt9hys6nhp75w87FA8pAXB9v3TjSIx9_xekMjqJR1_t7WxrTIQLJexQc7Cr5xiHMXzCshhSowZVEkItVDLYxaS3fYbYLhScKmWXVsCdf7DKfwpX8L98vGn3zZN_a4zTpSX-1/s1600/IMAG1261.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3Rol5ICntEt9hys6nhp75w87FA8pAXB9v3TjSIx9_xekMjqJR1_t7WxrTIQLJexQc7Cr5xiHMXzCshhSowZVEkItVDLYxaS3fYbYLhScKmWXVsCdf7DKfwpX8L98vGn3zZN_a4zTpSX-1/s320/IMAG1261.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also have a collection of pipe nipples (who decided to call them that?) and flanges and connectors, which is great because when the armature I found had a 3/8" nipple (rather than a 1/2" one, which I normally use), I was able to find a 3/8" flange to match it in our stash, instead of having to go to home depot.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjklctnOG6ztj3n5qTRuOshlqf_0gSqAck2oge3dLd9sqwk1wr2w1AgXscDAde9YyKKi5oaLdSwBUmiYJ3BWbI0ULER2GOlxLeP7b1nD5IUXozNDqQ7fIWg1d6VXorxZPFEUVQNM82MDD1g/s1600/IMAG1262.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjklctnOG6ztj3n5qTRuOshlqf_0gSqAck2oge3dLd9sqwk1wr2w1AgXscDAde9YyKKi5oaLdSwBUmiYJ3BWbI0ULER2GOlxLeP7b1nD5IUXozNDqQ7fIWg1d6VXorxZPFEUVQNM82MDD1g/s320/IMAG1262.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I did a quick sketch of the rough pose to bend the armature to...the pose will inevitably change (as they always do once I start sculpting) but this was a place to start.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8cZHJfwlAYVbdeOF2cJYIV0QLLHWvbgXrJgFLr9DYSxrspZvNUtMVok-Ept9xjbgbLRIIiFCIMZ4kN-gWWKBxx_eq0s_fB77jbhROTXeyIpwXl3qr6SVvXwJ3vUuViN7F7FZSsHxiaT5Y/s1600/IMAG1263.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8cZHJfwlAYVbdeOF2cJYIV0QLLHWvbgXrJgFLr9DYSxrspZvNUtMVok-Ept9xjbgbLRIIiFCIMZ4kN-gWWKBxx_eq0s_fB77jbhROTXeyIpwXl3qr6SVvXwJ3vUuViN7F7FZSsHxiaT5Y/s320/IMAG1263.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next I selected a board to mount the armature on.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxfkuO_pmMcyj2N5mL2HlHntiPErW8FyXMGAWUVivN0dYoqANb7obUyIrEgDBcY3RmOFqcc1JKZpBnYigBOIs-Em0hcz0PSm71QeUI44znZbXpyxFD_97OMNgBH__gvmqf3vlkaJRn_3Co/s1600/IMAG1264.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxfkuO_pmMcyj2N5mL2HlHntiPErW8FyXMGAWUVivN0dYoqANb7obUyIrEgDBcY3RmOFqcc1JKZpBnYigBOIs-Em0hcz0PSm71QeUI44znZbXpyxFD_97OMNgBH__gvmqf3vlkaJRn_3Co/s320/IMAG1264.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I marked the placement of where the holes should be and then drilled them.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmBljlZcCzpAKip5hCsBa8aSeM74JtOGLOWByk7P-hUmmGwWA1JWN7GwRNf-D5f4RmidBcnfRphDvXZXHoDvo88xMkyysyIKc8DKqjXuUUUVm7rpZLp-6I3mSOkXfSXJadD_ZkcC1Ct0QY/s1600/IMAG1265.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjmBljlZcCzpAKip5hCsBa8aSeM74JtOGLOWByk7P-hUmmGwWA1JWN7GwRNf-D5f4RmidBcnfRphDvXZXHoDvo88xMkyysyIKc8DKqjXuUUUVm7rpZLp-6I3mSOkXfSXJadD_ZkcC1Ct0QY/s320/IMAG1265.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The flange was a bad casting so all the holes were filled slightly blocked with excess metal, so I drilled that out too so the machine screws would go in smoothly.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-70jhDTrUgDc/TwRn7RF_ZAI/AAAAAAAADP4/Xz9V0xhWk_0/s1600/IMAG1266.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-70jhDTrUgDc/TwRn7RF_ZAI/AAAAAAAADP4/Xz9V0xhWk_0/s320/IMAG1266.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Each hole got a machine screw, a washer and a nut. You just have to make sure they aren't too long and extend past the runners on your board.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRaOJQhnmVxGbMdWg_KmpEmqVsMJ7wfeUv_fczx1M2hKLM_ZxoC6DZ385wJfhl99jCWdGsomI5idc07p3FmhzccHmkoMhDPVgcdp94oytoLGdAMyhNvs_JGcM1e5Gnv8w271CUkRfAH2VE/s1600/IMAG1267.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRaOJQhnmVxGbMdWg_KmpEmqVsMJ7wfeUv_fczx1M2hKLM_ZxoC6DZ385wJfhl99jCWdGsomI5idc07p3FmhzccHmkoMhDPVgcdp94oytoLGdAMyhNvs_JGcM1e5Gnv8w271CUkRfAH2VE/s320/IMAG1267.jpg" width="191" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once everything was in, I tightened it down.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBiFaXSBnNgZFmAQY1k-vkw2SK_Vn8zp89QajR6285iYL32Eoav1i9Z_L2HSgLY7QGS57tmhTpLiRlRnn9kY5lGeNvRDoZMCtS_9jLbAvQlaQaZgjV2cEhE7isBrf1ep_PHOS_hFwxq-Gz/s1600/IMAG1268.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhBiFaXSBnNgZFmAQY1k-vkw2SK_Vn8zp89QajR6285iYL32Eoav1i9Z_L2HSgLY7QGS57tmhTpLiRlRnn9kY5lGeNvRDoZMCtS_9jLbAvQlaQaZgjV2cEhE7isBrf1ep_PHOS_hFwxq-Gz/s320/IMAG1268.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
And then screwed the armature piece into the flange. This was used for a figure in the past, so I turned it around and the wire that would normally be used for the head, I used as the tail. The arms and legs were just re-bent to work for this application.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjepqN79jhI6_N1PGLiHxIebBgUH7NxyAqwK8AXJXYlMwG2m7hrbaUwwJkQiSJIzdR6swUzHAOj-xQtOHHqYafgenqo5xEWv8afdMAkN4FMiXr-PbIz2zo4O5fU3XVRO4zCNdZJw-a3_jBp/s1600/IMAG1269.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjepqN79jhI6_N1PGLiHxIebBgUH7NxyAqwK8AXJXYlMwG2m7hrbaUwwJkQiSJIzdR6swUzHAOj-xQtOHHqYafgenqo5xEWv8afdMAkN4FMiXr-PbIz2zo4O5fU3XVRO4zCNdZJw-a3_jBp/s320/IMAG1269.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I added an extra piece of armature wire to the front, so the cat will have a head. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-Oni4eg3jVC_8Iz-ktzJLNbq_dwniZBf1SjvJCvW8Hy_cfRz3M2UXXCRsqEN-5JsQ17dMMCnVqwejEwVTeRr41lQRkyOJxQ_OgZFA__sBtM9b54hWjwD1A3qRIrgz0zJFhifTUKhOlD-G/s1600/IMAG1271.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-Oni4eg3jVC_8Iz-ktzJLNbq_dwniZBf1SjvJCvW8Hy_cfRz3M2UXXCRsqEN-5JsQ17dMMCnVqwejEwVTeRr41lQRkyOJxQ_OgZFA__sBtM9b54hWjwD1A3qRIrgz0zJFhifTUKhOlD-G/s320/IMAG1271.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When the wires feel a little loose, I put a screw in the hole...the aluminum wires are soft enough that the screw threads into them a bit, locking everything into place.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM4FhUr8QBtJ4et3jWC1GkwjfdOXbFgqsKprp6GxFQOEWSyTxLtDqxxyNZG_xRVDKd9GoATDyvihy3HPNPrcSbXfiQ8bNDwhUgkl41H7dicAUANdz5LX1G05woqle_hhBmegxALWHkgGD3/s1600/IMAG1272.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgM4FhUr8QBtJ4et3jWC1GkwjfdOXbFgqsKprp6GxFQOEWSyTxLtDqxxyNZG_xRVDKd9GoATDyvihy3HPNPrcSbXfiQ8bNDwhUgkl41H7dicAUANdz5LX1G05woqle_hhBmegxALWHkgGD3/s320/IMAG1272.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />I then wrapped that wire with some thinner wrapping wire, which helps the clay hold on better.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

Sometimes things break...such is life. Sometimes coming out of the mold, sometimes while chasing them, and sometimes your daughter just breaks something that's already finished (see the squirrel). Today while in the studio I fixed a few pieces that were in need of a little love. I used PC 11, a two part epoxy that is great. This version is especially nice because if things are wet (freshly cast plaster) the epoxy will still set up. It will even set up under water! Anyway, its easy enough, just an equal mix of each part, blended until the color is consistent throughout. I put a little on each side of the break, press them together, wipe away any excess and then put a little blue tape around the seam to help secure the pieces/apply a bit of pressure. Sometimes I use a pin to secure two pieces together if its a break in a larger area, like the squirrel's tail. I then let it set for 24 hours and once its ready, cut away any residue that seeped out. Then I'll chase/patch/paint as usual and all is right in the world. </div>
